Living space proportions corrected with removal of existing balcony.

A 1970s-era modern home, the existing roof pitch rendered much of the existing floor area of the 2nd and mezzanine levels unusable. A portion of the existing roof was removed to create a ‘pop-up’ producing space for an expanded master suite with new bath and dressing room.

The result is an addition without “an addition.”

Second floor plan showing expanded master suite and new hall bath.

Mezzanine level plan. The addition of a stair to this level made it possible to use it for his-hers offices.

A new stair links the now-accessible third floor offices to the lower level and provides an anchor to newly-opened interior.

The new stair and skylight drive light deep into the interior.

Details for the new open-riser stair that meets contemporary code and bounces light.

New stair treads taper to provide thinnest edge possible while still meeting code requirements.

Interior skylights allow rooms to share and borrow daylight.

The new stair links a third floor mezzanine, previously only accessible by ladders.

Thew new master suite featuring a 'soaking tube with a view' and walk-in shower.
