National Building Museum Exhibition Design

Washington, DC

The design for this exhibition announcing the 20 finalist teams for the 2011 US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon makes  use of the exhibition space as a meta-environment teaching tool, helping the viewer understand how the entries will need to perform in response to the environmental conditions which serve as a the judging criteria for the competition.  The yearly solar array for Washington DC was mapped across the walls and vaulted ceiling of the space at hourly intervals, highlighting Oct. 8th, 20101- the opening of the Decathlon – in special reflective vinyl film.  Detailed models of each entry were placed in approximate scalar relationship to their assigned location on the National Mall.  Panels detailing the design of each entry were incorporated into a ribbon which further explained the history, criteria and goals of the competition as well as winning features from previous entries.
